A pivotal novel in the Dead Man series...

Matt Cahill was an ordinary man leading a simple life until a shocking accident changed everything. Now he can see a nightmarish netherworld that exists within our own. Now he's on a dangerous quest for the answers to who he is and what he has become…and engaged in an epic battle to save us, and his soul, from the clutches of pure evil.

In the blasted hell of the Arizona desert, Matt hitches a ride with a young couple who meets a terrible fate that he's powerless to stop. The bloody encounter leads him to a mysterious stranger with a terrifying history…who may know the reason for Matt's resurrection and hold the key to finally ending his lonely quest. But first they must survive in an unforgiving wasteland to do battle with a gang of heavily armed smugglers who trade in human flesh.

The Rising Dead Dead Man Book 21 eBook Stella Green Lee Goldberg William Rabkin

The Rising Dead by Stella Green concludes the second "season" of the Dead Man series. Written by a family friend of series producer Lee Goldberg, it's one of the better books in the series. Goldberg was so impressed after reading the manuscript for Green's first novel, Awakening Snakes, that he offered her a slot in the Dead Man series.

In this episode Matt Cahill, with ax ever ready, first travels to Denver to check out a mountain climber who may be one of the resurrected too. A teenager has survived 18 days trapped in a crevice, was assumed dead when the rescuers could find no pulse, but later revived and claimed to see rotting corpses. Matt doesn't quite make it to him in time, but does encounter several Russian mobsters.

The actions shifts to the southwestern USA near the Mexican border where Matt encounters recently married couple Cheryl and Jeff who are on their way to San Bernardino, California. As usual, trouble comes looking for Matt when they give him a lift. After picking up a strange man walking along the lonesome highway, Matt begins to feel the evil influence of Mr. Dark.they drive into a gas station where a band of human smugglers, or coyotes just happen to be resting and the violence begins.

The best part of the book is another resurrected character Green introduces to the series. Known only as "The Stranger" he's a man who is hundreds of years old and has given up fighting the sinister demon of the series, Mr. Dark. He's a standard character found in a hundred spaghetti western movies, but new to the Dead Man series. Much of the novelette is about him, including an entire episode where he last tried to wage war on the evil in Mexico.

The Stranger has an interesting take on Mr. Dark:

"' I believe I’m here for more than his amusement, to feed his need for bloodshed. But he’s grown stronger and more dangerous. I think my chance has passed. In the beginning he could control one or two people at a time, but now he can summon a small army. He is evolving. I think he was flesh and blood once, like we were. Violence and evil give him power. He uses that power to spread evil and becomes even stronger. It’s like a snowball rolling downhill.'"

I'm hoping the series will bring back The Stranger. He's proven to be the best character they've introduced.

The Rising Dead Dead Man Book 21 eBook Stella Green Lee Goldberg William Rabkin Reviews

I would have liked to see more specific detail and transition between locations, but the story moves along quickly and with high suspense.
I love this series. It keeps getting better and better. Very well written and a great read. Please write faster.
I really love the series and have read every book. They are all approx 100 pages and as such I expect a quick read. Having said this, The Rising Dead is one of the worst written in the series. Don't get me wrong, I love the story. It really seems the series is now headed in a different (which can be good) direction. The first half of this book however is abysmal. The first fourth is so rushed that it is almost unreadable. Did I just miss it or did the Russian plot have nothing to do with the rest of the story? Weeks pass in a paragraph, just pointless.

As I said before, the series is all about short books which is why I read them. This is the first one to seem rushed. After the halfway part you get into the story and it captures my attention, especially The Stranger's past.

The Stranger is an intriguing character and I think I am going to like the new direction but I just hope the writing from here on out is not as bad.
Matt Cahill meets another like him. Known only as The Stranger, he's much older and has been battling evil for hundreds of years.

Together, the pair must face off against a gang of Mexican slavers and rescue a young woman who'd aided Matt. Also, the sister of a young girl who'd escaped them.

Excellent action paced nicely.
I'm writing another review on the Dead Man Series. I'm at #21 and can not wait for the next one! I check every few weeks to see if the next chapter in the series is out. This story is very addictive- well it has been to me at least!
Give a few of the first ones a try and see if you just can't wait for the next in the series to come out!!!
I have been hooked on this series since book one. As soon as the next one becomes available for pre-order, I buy it. I've loved every one of the other books, but I didn't like the writing style of this one. I liked the story line but the writing didn't flow like the others. I found the writing style distracting and a little frustrating in some places. Sorry! I'm anxiously awaiting the next one in the series to see where the story line goes from here.
I was impressed with the Stella Green story. This being the final in the first series and the set up for the next series with the creation of a new character called The Stranger. The Strange was really overdue. It is time to move the story on. I agree fully with the preamble regarding Stella Green's ability to write. I was so impressed that I have now purchased her novel Awakening Snakes which I look forward to reading soon. This story flows nicely with good action that is sudden and intense. I look forward to the next series to begin and I think The Rising Dead has done its job in creating anticipation of where the tale will go now that it is allowed to move on from one man axe and pony horror show to something perhaps more complex. At least I hope that is where it is going. Only question I had is, how did Deer Park move across the border into Oregon, I thought it was in Washington State? Okay--who cares, number 21 is worth the read and for followers of the series a must read.
